Chapter 10
The new shadow nymph trainees clamped their mouths shut, and they straightened their backs and shoulders until they looked as still as statues.
âMike.â Katie stared at the four all-black figures between us, and then she turned to glare at me. âWhat the actual fuck?â
Panic drummed so loud in my ears, and I half-expected Katie to run screaming from the room or faint or burst into hysterical crying. I should have known all she would do was stand there and stare at me as she waited for an explanation.
I couldnât exactly give her one, though.
I swallowed the rising horror in my throat as I tried to figure out what she had likely seen as she stormed through the house to find me. She definitely would have seen that this place was way bigger than it should be, and there were four shadow nymph guards standing right in front of her. Not to mention sheâd had to have passed by Tristan at some point.
How the fuck did she get past him?
And then walked in on me in a fucking throne room, sitting on a legitimate throne.
Fuck.
How did she get so far into the mansion without being stopped by somebody?
My eyes narrowed with irritation, and I turned an accusing look on my new guards. All four of them had the good sense to lower their heads with disgrace, and I knew they understood the implications of what was happening.
I sighed with resignation, and I knew they could only be held so accountable. They were no better than interns, and theyâd only been on the job for two days. Iâd sent Nyxx off after Rhaiden without an opportunity to discuss anything with her fellow guards, and really, my sister showing up was the least dangerous thing that could have happened during the gap of guard duty.
Besides, a tiny part of my mind breathed with relief and jumped with joy that I had a valid excuse to tell Katie everything now.
I hated keeping all of this from my family, especially my favorite sister, and now she knew something more was going on here than what Iâd told her.
I could even make an argument that it was safer to tell her a little bit than tell her nothing and leave her to investigate on her own. Katie was like a dog with a bone, and I knew sheâd never stop until she got answers. Leaving her to her own devices was a terrible and dangerous idea. It would put her life in danger, and it could pose even more serious risk to the Eternal Realmâs secrets.
âHey, Katie,â I said in what I hoped was a casual voice. âI wasnât expecting you.â
I walked over and tried to steer her out of the throne room.
âYou look really good,â I said, and I tried to get her attention with the start of her new school year in a few weeks. âHave you gotten your new class list yet? I knowââ
âMichael Ayers!â Katie shrieked, and she yanked her arm out of my reach.
